The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 your companion is neither astray, neither errs, 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 And he is in the highest part of the horizon. 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 His heart added no untruth to what he saw. 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which covered it. 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 Is it for you the males and for Him the females? 21 This is an unfair distinction! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 All that is in the life to come and all that is in this life belongs only to God. 25
