O you who wraps himself [in clothing], 1 Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part 2 It may be half the night or a little less than that 3 Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones. 4 We shall soon entrust to you a message heavy (with solemnity). 5 Surely in the watches of the night the soul is most receptive and words more telling. 6 During the day, you are preoccupied with many activities. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and, leaving others, devote yourself solely to Him. 8 He is the Lord of the east and the west, there is no deity but Him, so take Him as your Guardian. 9 And bear thou with patience whatsoever they say, and depart from them with a becoming departure. 10 Leave those to Me who deny, the lovers of ease and comfort; and bear with them for a while. 11 We have prepared for them fetters, flaming fire, 12 And food that chokes and a painful punishment, 13 On the Day when the earth and the mountains will be in violent shake, and the mountains will be a heap of sand poured out and flowing down. 14 Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But Fir'aun (Pharaoh) disobeyed the Messenger [Musa (Moses)], so We seized him with a severe punishment. 16 If you disbelieve, how will you guard yourself against the Day that will make children gray haired, 17 Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished. 18 This is indeed an advice; so whoever wishes may take the path towards his Lord. 19
