The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience. 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 save those that pray 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Are free of blame, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
