In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
O thou wrapped up in thy raiment! 1 Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little - 2 Half of it, or a little less than that, 3 Or increase thereto. And intone the Qur'an with measured intonations. 4 Behold, We shall cast upon thee a weighty word; 5 [and,] verily, the hours of night impress the mind most strongly and speak with the clearest voice, 6 Verily there is for thee by day occupation prolonged. 7 And remember thou the name of thy Lord, and devote thyself to Him with an exclusive devotion. 8 Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He; so take Him for a Guardian. 9 And patiently endure upon what the disbelievers say, and leave them for good. 10 And leave Me Alone to deal with the beliers (those who deny My Verses, etc.), and those who are in possession of good things of life. And give them respite for a little while. 11 Verily with Us are heavy fetters and Scorch. 12 And food which choketh (the partaker), and a painful doom 13 On that day, the earth and the mountains will be violently shaken, and the mountains will be turned into heaps of moving sand. 14 Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 Pharaoh disobeyed Our Messenger, so We seized him remorselessly. 16 Then how can you fear, if you disbelieve, a Day that will make the children white- haired? 17 And the heaven shall be split therein. His promise indeed must be fulfilled. 18 Verily this is a reminder. So let him who desires take the way to his Lord. 19
