We sent an inspiration to Moses: "Travel by night with My servants, and strike a dry path for them through the sea, without fear of being overtaken (by Pharaoh) and without (any other) fear." 77 Pharaoh followed them with his hosts, but they were overwhelmed by the sea; 78 And Firaun led his people astray, and did not guide them. 79 O Children of Israel, We delivered you from your enemy, and We made an appointment with you at the right side of the mount, and We sent down to you manna and quails, 80 I allowed you to consume the pure sustenance which We had given you but not to become rebels, lest you become subject to My wrath. Whoever becomes subject to My wrath will certainly be destroyed. 81 And verily I am the Most Forgiving unto whomsoever repenteth and believeth and worketh righteously, and thereafter letteth himself remain guided. 82 ۞ [Allah] said, "And what made you hasten from your people, O Moses?" 83 He replied: "Behold, they are close on my footsteps: I hastened to thee, O my Lord, to please thee." 84 [Allah] said, "But indeed, We have tried your people after you [departed], and the Samiri has led them astray." 85 Thereupon Moses returned to his people full of wrath and sorrow, [and] exclaimed: "O my people! Did not your Sustainer hold out [many] a goodly promise to you? bid, then, [the fulfilment of] this promise seem to you too long in coming? Or are you, perchance, determined to see your Sustainer's condemnation fall upon you, and so you broke your promise to me?" 86 They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Samiri throw." 87 Then he produced for them a calf, of saffron hue, which gave forth a lowing sound. And they cried: This is your god and the god of Moses, but he hath forgotten. 88 What? Did they not see that thing returned no speech unto them, neither had any power to hurt or profit them? 89
