The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 Arise, and warn. 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 and purify your clothing, 4 and flee from the statues! 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 but unto thy Sustainer turn in patience. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 Then looked he, 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 We have not appointed any one but angels as keepers of Hell, and their number that We have fixed is to make it a means of contention for disbelievers, so that those who were given the Book may be certain, and the faith of the believers may have greater increase, and the people of the Book and believers may not be deceived, and the sceptics and infidels may say: "What does God mean by this parable?" That is how God leads whosoever He will astray, and guides whosoever He will. None knows the armies of your Lord save Him self. This is no more than reminder for mankind. 31
