The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And accepts the best, 6 Unto him therefore We shall indeed make easy the path to ease. 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance, 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 I have warned you about the fierce blazing fire 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 who have rejected the (Truth) and have turned away from it. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself 18 and confers no favour on any man for recompense, 19 Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high, 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
