The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 The freeing of a slave! 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
