Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
