The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Arise, and warn. 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 thy robes purify 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 it will be a hard day 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then he looked, 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 Scorching the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
