The Town (Al-Balad)

20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
