A multitude of those of old 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
