The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 and guard their private parts 29 Are free of blame, 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
