[AND the tribe of] Ad gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 123 When their brother Hud said to them: "Will you not take heed? 124 "Verily! I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 125 so fear you God, and obey you me. 126 I ask no recompense of you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 127 Do you build monuments on every high place in vanity, 128 and raise strong mansions as if you were to live forever? 129 And when you strike, you strike as tyrants. 130 So fear Allah and obey me. 131 Have fear of Him Who has provided you with all the (good) things you know; 132 "Freely has He bestowed on you cattle and sons,- 133 and gardens, and springs: 134 indeed, I fear for you the torment of an awful day." 135 They said, “It is the same for us, whether you advise us or not be of the preachers.” 136 That is nothing but a habit of the ancients, 137 We will not be subjected to any chastisement." 138 And they denied him; therefor We destroyed them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 139 Surely your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 140
