He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 How could you know? Perhaps he would cleanse himself, 3 Or be admonished, so that the admonition might have profited him? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 So you are after him! 6 Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed. 7 And as to him who comes to you striving hard, 8 And whereas he fears, 9 From him you are distracted. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 In honored books, 13 exalted, purified, 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 Noble and pious. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what stuff hath He created him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 Then He caused him to die and be buried 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 Then let mankind look at his food - 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 then We split the earth in fissures 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And Grapes and nutritious plants, 28 And olives and date palms, 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 fruits, and grass. 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when there comes the Deafening Blast 33 it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 his wife and his children. 36 Every man of them shall on that day have an affair which will occupy him. 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 laughing and joyous 39 whereas some faces will be covered with dust 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
