The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And believed the best matter to be true 6 We will facilitate for him the easy end. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high, 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
