He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 when the blind came to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 As for him who regardeth himself self-sufficient 5 Unto him thou payest regard. 6 And you have nothing to lose if he does not become pure. 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 And he feareth 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 No indeed; this is only a Reminder. 11 Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance. 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 by the hands of the noble, virtuous, 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Be cursed (the disbelieving) man! How ungrateful he is! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 then the way eased for him, 20 then causes him to die and buries him, 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 Nay, but [man] has never yet fulfilled what He has enjoined upon him! 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 We send down abundant water, 25 then We split the earth in fissures 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 together with grapes and vegetables, 28 And olives and date palms, 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 On the Day a man will flee from his brother 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 and veiled with darkness. 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
