The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the sun and its brightness 1 By the Moon as she follows him; 2 And the day when it revealeth him, 3 by the night, when it envelops it! 4 And the heaven and Him Who made it, 5 And the earth and Him Who spread it, 6 By the soul and Him Who propertioned it, 7 then inspired it to understand what was right and wrong for it. 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness). 10 The tribe of Thamud denied with rebellion. 11 When the basest of them broke forth 12 And the apostle of God had to tell them: "This is God's she-camel, let her drink." 13 Then they belied him and they hamstrung her; wherefore their Lord overwhelmed them for their crime, and made it equal. 14 He did not fear the consequences. 15
