The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
