The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Arise and warn! 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 and purify your clothing, 4 and defilement flee! 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
