The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 save those that pray 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
