In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O THOU enwrapped one! 1 Stand (to pray) all night, except a little. 2 A half thereof, or abate a little thereof, 3 or add to it [at will]; and [during that time] recite the Qur'an calmly and distinctly, with thy mind attuned to its meaning. 4 Behold, We shall cast upon thee a weighty word; 5 Indeed, the first part of night is heavier in tread, and more upright in speech. 6 whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. 7 And remember thou the name of thy Lord, and devote thyself to Him with an exclusive devotion. 8 Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He; so take Him for a Guardian. 9 Bear with patience what they say, and gracefully come away from them. 10 Leave the prosperous disbelievers to Me and give them respite for a little while; 11 With Us are Fetters (to bind them), and a Fire (to burn them), 12 and food that chokes, and grievous suffering 13 On the Day when the earth with all its mountains quake and the mountains become heaps of shifting sand. 14 We have sent a messenger who is a witness over you, just as We sent a messenger to Pharoah before you. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure. 16 So how will you save yourselves, if you disbelieve, on a day that will turn children old? 17 The heaven will split asunder with its grief; the promise of Allah will surely occur. 18 Lo! This is a Reminder. Let him who will, then, choose a way unto his Lord. 19
