The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER this unfolding [of God's message,] as it comes down from on high! 1 Your companion (Muhammad SAW) has neither gone astray nor has erred. 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 taught by One who is Stern in power. 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 And he was on the horizon of the highest heaven. 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw. 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 Indeed he saw him a second time, 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 Neither did sight falter nor exceed the bounds. 17 Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 Are there sons for you, and daughters for Him? 21 This is certainly an unjust apportioning. 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
