Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 Whereon every wise command is made clear 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
