The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Star when it goes down,- 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 nor does he speak out of his desire. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 He was taught by one Mighty in Power, 5 One strong of make. Then he stood straight. 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 by the lote-tree of the farthest limit, 14 near which is Paradise. 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 (Muhammad's) eyes did not deceive him, nor did they lead him to falsehood. 17 He certainly saw the greatest (signs) of the existence of his Lord. 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 and your third idol al-Manat (whom you considered as God's daughters)? 20 What! For you the son, and for Him the daughter? 21 That were indeed an unjust division. 22 These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
