Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the clear Book, 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many were the gardens, springs, 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
