۞ “Gather all the unjust persons and their spouses, and all that they used to worship!” – 22 “Instead of Allah – and herd them to the path leading to hell.” 23 And stop them, for they must be questioned. 24 How is it that you are not helping one another? 25 indeed, on that Day they will surrender themselves. 26 And some of them inclined towards others, mutually questioning. 27 They will say: verily ye! ye were wont to come unto us Imposing. 28 They shall say: Nay, you (yourselves) were not believers; 29 Moreover, we had no power at all over you: nay, you were people filled with overweening arrogance! 30 "So now the Word of our Lord has been justified against us, that we shall certainly (have to) taste (the torment). 31 Thus we misled you. Lo! we were (ourselves) astray. 32 On that Day they will all share the punishment: 33 Thus do We treat the culprits. 34 Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allah," were arrogant 35 And to say: What! shall we indeed give up our gods for the sake of a mad poet? 36 Nay, but he brought the Truth, and he confirmed those sent (before him). 37 Verily, you (pagans of Makkah) are going to taste the painful torment; 38 But it will be no more than the retribution of (the Evil) that ye have wrought;- 39 Except for God's sincere servants; 40 will have their determined sustenance 41 Fruits (Delights); and they (shall enjoy) honour and dignity, 42 In gardens of pleasure, 43 On thrones, facing each other. 44 Cups of wine will be presented to them in rounds, from a spring flowing in front of them. 45 clear, delightful to those who drink it: 46 No headiness there shall be therein, nor shall they be therewith inebriated. 47 And with them will be women limiting [their] glances, with large, [beautiful] eyes, 48 As if they were (delicate) eggs closely guarded. 49 So one among them turns to the other, questioning. – 50 One of them will start the talk and say: "I had an intimate companion (on the earth), 51 who would say, "Are you a confirmer? 52 After we are dead and have become all dust and bones shall we still be requited?' 53 He said: 'Will you look down?' 54 He looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire. 55 He will say, "By God! You almost brought me to ruin! 56 But for Allah's favour, I should be one of those who have been mustered here. 57 Then, are we not to die 58 "Except our first death, and that we shall not be punished?" 59 Indeed, this is the great attainment. 60 For the like of this, then, let them labour, those who labour [in God's way]! 61 Is that better by way of hospitality or the Zaqqum tree, 62 Lo! We have appointed it a torment for wrong-doers. 63 Indeed it is a tree that sprouts from the base of hell. 64 its fruit [as repulsive] as satans' heads; 65 So indeed they will eat from it, and fill their bellies with it. 66 Then on the top of that they will be given boiling water to drink so that it becomes a mixture (of boiling water and Zaqqum in their bellies). 67 Then thereafter, verily, their return is to the flaming fire of Hell. 68 They had indeed found their forefathers astray. 69 and they are running in their footsteps. 70 And certainly most of the ancients went astray before them, 71 and We had sent among them Messengers to warn them. 72 See how terrible was the end of those who were warned. 73 EXCEPT for God's true servants, [most people are apt to go astray.] 74
