We commanded Moses: "Journey by night with Our creatures, and strike a dry path for them through the sea. Do not fear being overtaken, nor have dread of any thing." 77 And Pharaoh pursued them with his hosts: and they were overwhelmed by the sea which was destined to overwhelm them. 78 The Pharaoh and his people had gone away from guidance. 79 Children of Israel, We saved you from your enemy and promised to settle you on the right side of the peaceful Mount Tur (Sinai) and We sent you manna and quails. 80 'Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you; but exceed not therein, or My anger shall alight on you; and on whomsoever My anger alights, that man is hurled to ruin. 81 But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance. 82 ۞ 'Moses, why have you come with such haste from your nation' 83 He answered: "They are treading in my footsteps while I have hastened unto Thee, O my Sustainer, so that Thou might be well-pleased [with me]." 84 He said: "We have put your people on trial in your absence; and Sameri has led them astray." 85 Thereupon Moses returned to his people full of wrath and sorrow, [and] exclaimed: "O my people! Did not your Sustainer hold out [many] a goodly promise to you? bid, then, [the fulfilment of] this promise seem to you too long in coming? Or are you, perchance, determined to see your Sustainer's condemnation fall upon you, and so you broke your promise to me?" 86 They said: "We broke not the promise to thee, as far as lay in our power: but we were made to carry the weight of the ornaments of the (whole) people, and we threw them (into the fire), and that was what the Samiri suggested. 87 Then he produced for them a calf, of saffron hue, which gave forth a lowing sound. And they cried: This is your god and the god of Moses, but he hath forgotten. 88 Did they not consider that the calf could not give them any answer, nor it could harm or benefit them? 89
