The Embryo (Al-Alaq)

19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

READ IN THE name of your Lord who created, 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One 3 who taught by the Pen, 4 Hath taught man that which he knew not. 5 By no means: Verily man exorbitateth. 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Surely your returning is to your Lord. 8 Have you seen one who prevents 9 a servant of Ours from prayer? 10 Do you think he is rightly guided, 11 Or enjoins piety? 12 Hast thou considered whether he may [not] be giving the lie to the truth and turning his back [upon it]? 13 Does he not know that Allah sees? 14 Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock,- 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)! 18 (Muhammad), never yield to him! Prostrate yourself and try to come closer to God. ۩ 19
