The chiefs of Firon's people said: most surely this is an enchanter possessed of knowledge: 109 who seeks to drive you out from your land. What would you have us do?' 110 They answered: "Let him and his brother wait awhile, and send unto all cities heralds 111 who shall bring before thee every sorcerer of great knowledge." 112 And the magicians came to Pharaoh. They said, "Indeed for us is a reward if we are the predominant." 113 He said, “Yes, and you will then become close to me.” 114 They said: "O Moses! Either thou shalt throw [thy staff first,] or we shall [be the first to] throw." 115 "You cast it first," answered Moses. When they cast their spell, they bewitched the eyes of the people and petrified them by conjuring up a great charm. 116 Then We revealed to Moses: 'Now, throw down your staff' And thereupon it swallowed up their false invention. 117 ۞ Thus was the Truth vindicated and that which they were doing was made vain. 118 So they were vanquished there, and they turned about, humbled. 119 And the magicians were obliged to fall prostrate. 120 And said: "We have come to believe in the Lord of all the worlds, 121 "The Lord of Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron)." 122 Said Pharaoh, "You believed in him before I gave you permission. Indeed, this is a conspiracy which you conspired in the city to expel therefrom its people. But you are going to know. 123 "Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on apposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross." 124 They answered: "We have (in any case) to go back to our Lord. 125 Thou takest vengeance upon us only because we have believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour out upon us patience, and gather us unto Thee surrendering.' 126
