The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the star when it sets: 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 Nor doth he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 While he was in the highest part of the horizon: 7 Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, 8 two bows' length away, or nearer, 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 The [servant's] heart did not give the lie to what he saw: 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 Indeed, he saw him another time 13 by the lote-tree at the farthest boundary, 14 Near which is the garden, the place to be resorted to. 15 When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over; 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 That is indeed an unfair division! 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Is the human to have whatever he fancies? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
