Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha, Meem. 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. 23 And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. 24 How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
