The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth' 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 Or to the poor man lying in the dust. 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
True are the words of God the Almighty.
