a good many of olden times, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 Verily we are undone. 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
