The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn, 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 it will be a hard day 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 Again, death seize him, how he determined! 20 Then he looked round; 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 and it has nineteen angelic keepers. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
