The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 where none shall burn except the most wicked, 15 who have rejected the (Truth) and have turned away from it. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction. 21
