The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 arise and give warning! 2 Thy Lord magnify, 3 and purify your clothing, 4 And all abomination shun! 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 it will be a hard day 9 Not easy upon the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 and children living in his presence, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 20 Then he looked, 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allah intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a reminder to humanity. 31
