The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Read (Prophet Muhammad) in the Name of your Lord who created, 1 created man from a clot of congealed blood. 2 Read, for your Lord is most beneficent, 3 The One Who taught to write with the pen. 4 Taught man what he knew not. 5 By no means: Verily man exorbitateth. 6 for he thinks himself self-sufficient. 7 Verily unto thy Lord is the return. 8 Have you seen the one who prohibits 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 Do you think he is rightly guided, 11 Or enjoins righteousness? 12 Have you seen if he denies and turns away - 13 Knoweth he not that Allah beholdeth? 14 No indeed; surely, if he gives not over, We shall seize him by the forelock, 15 By the lying, the sinful forelock. 16 Let him call on his associates for help 17 We will call the guards of hell. 18 Beware! Do not obey him, but bow in adoration and draw near (to your Lord). ۩ 19
