O YOU ENWRAPPED in the cloak (of Prophethood), 1 rise (to pray) the night except a little; 2 Half of it, or lessen it a little, 3 Or a little more; and recite the Quran (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style. 4 Behold, We shall cast upon you a Weighty Word. 5 Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words. 6 You have by day prolonged occupations. 7 Remember the Name of your Lord and dedicate yourself devoutly to Him. 8 He is the Lord of the East and the West. There is no god but He. So take Him alone as your protector. 9 Bear patiently whatever they say, do not yield to them and keep on preaching decently to them. 10 Leave it to Me to deal with the affluent ones who give the lie (to the Truth), and bear with them for a while. 11 With Us are Fetters (to bind them), and a Fire (to burn them), 12 And food which choketh (the partaker), and a painful doom 13 on the Day when the earth and the mountains will be convulsed and the mountains will [crumble and] become like a sand-dune on the move! 14 Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger; so We seized him with a heavy Punishment. 16 If you disbelieve, how will you guard yourself against the Day that will make children gray haired, 17 And the heaven shall be split therein. His promise indeed must be fulfilled. 18 This is indeed an advice; so whoever wishes may take the path towards his Lord. 19
