We sent Moses with Our signs to the Pharaoh and his nobles. He said: "I have been sent by the Lord of all the worlds." 46 Yet when he brought forth Clear Signs from Us, then lo, they burst into laughter. 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 (Whenever they faced an affliction) they would say: “O magician, pray for us to your Lord according to your station with Him. We shall certainly be guided to the Right Way.” 49 Yet no sooner did We take away the affliction from them than they broke their pledge. 50 And Firon proclaimed amongst his people: O my people! is not the kingdom of Egypt mine? And these rivers flow beneath me; do you not then see? 51 Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear? 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 Thus he made light (of the matter) to his people, and they obeyed him. They were certainly wicked. 54 We took revenge on them by drowning them all together. 55 So We made them a bygone fable and a lesson for the latter generations. 56
