Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha. Mim. 1 By the clear Book, 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 Covering the people; this is a painful torment. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? 14 We now remove the punishment for some days so you will again commit the same. 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
