A group of his people who disbelieved him and had called the Day of Judgment a lie and whom We had made prosperous in this life, said, "He is a mere mortal like you. He eats and drinks as you do. 33 If you were to obey a human being like yourselves, you will certainly be losers. 34 Does he give you a promise that when you are dead and turned to dust and bones, you will be raised to life again? 35 ۞ What you are promised is indeed far-fetched. 36 There is naught but our life of the world; we die and we live, and we shall not be raised (again). 37 He is but a man who hath fabricated against God a lie, and in him we are not going to be believers. 38 He said: my Lord! vindicate for they belie me. 39 God said, "Before long they will be filled with regret." 40 So the punishment overtook them in justice, and We made them as rubbish; so away with the unjust people. 41 Then We raised after them other generations. 42 No nation will precede its time [of termination], nor will they remain [thereafter]. 43 Then We sent Our Messengers in succession. Whenever a Messenger came to his people they rejected him, calling him a liar. Thereupon, We made each people to follow the other (to its doom), reducing them to mere tales (of the past). Scourged be the people who do not believe! 44 Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our tokens and a clear warrant 45 To Pharaoh and his nobles who behaved with arrogance, for they were a conceited lot, 46 They said, "Should we believe two men like ourselves while their people are for us in servitude?" 47 So they denied them both [Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron)] and became of those who were destroyed. 48 And We gave Moses the Book, that haply they would be guided; 49 And [as We exalted Moses, so, too,] We made the son of Mary and his mother a symbol [of Our grace,] and provided for both an abode in a lofty place of lasting restfulness and unsullied springs. 50
