Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 Whereon every wise command is made clear 4 an order from Us. We are ever sending. 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 Yet they are lost in doubt and play. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 So the heavens and the earth did not weep for them, and they were not given respite. 29
