We sent a revelation to Moses saying, "Take away My servants by night and strike for them a dry path through the sea. Have no fear of being overtaken and do not be afraid." 77 The Pharaoh and his army chased Moses and his people but were drowned by the sea. 78 And Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide [them]. 79 O Children of Israel! We delivered you from your enemy, and we made a covenant with you on the holy mountain's side, and sent down on you the manna and the quails, 80 [Saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you and do not transgress [or oppress others] therein, lest My anger should descend upon you. And he upon whom My anger descends has certainly fallen." 81 Yet I am gracious to him who repents and believes, and does the right, and follows the straight path. 82 ۞ “And why did you come in haste ahead of your people, O Moosa?” 83 He said: "They are close on my footsteps, and I hastened to You, O my Lord, that You might be pleased." 84 He said: verily We have tempted thy people after thee, and the Samiri hath led them astray. 85 So Moses returned to his people full of anger and regret. "O my people," he said, "did not your Lord make you a better promise? Did the time of covenant seem too long to you? Or did you wish the wrath of your Lord to fall upon you that you broke the promise you had made to me?" 86 They answered: "We did not break our promise with you out of our own volition; but we were laden with the load of people's ornaments, and we simply threw them down(into the fire), and the Samiri also threw down something, 87 He therefore made a calf for them – a lifeless body, making sounds like a cow – so they said, “This is your God and the God of Moosa; whereas Moosa has forgotten.” 88 Observed they not that it returned not unto them a word, and owned not for them hurt or profit? 89
