We sent revelations to Moses telling him, "Travel with My servants during the night and strike a dry road across the sea (for them). Have no fear of being overtaken (by the Pharaoh) nor of anything else". 77 The Pharaoh and his army chased Moses and his people but were drowned by the sea. 78 And Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide [them]. 79 Children of Israel! We delivered you from your enemies and We made a covenant with you on the right side of the Mount. We sent down manna and quails for you, 80 saying: "Partake of the good things that We have provided for you, but do not transgress lest My wrath fall upon you; for he upon whom My wrath falls is ruined. 81 And verily, I am indeed Forgiving to him who repents, believes (in My Oneness, and associates none in worship with Me) and does righteous good deeds, and then remains constant in doing them, (till his death). 82 ۞ What made you hurry away, O Moses, from your people?" 83 He submitted, “They are here, just behind me – and O my Lord, I hastened towards You, in order to please You.” 84 He said: "We have put your people on trial in your absence; and Sameri has led them astray." 85 Then Moses went back unto his folk, angry and sad. He said: O my people! Hath not your Lord promised you a fair promise? Did the time appointed then appear too long for you, or did ye wish that wrath from your Lord should come upon you, that ye broke tryst with me? 86 They said: We broke not tryst with thee of our own will, but we were laden with burdens of ornaments of the folk, then cast them (in the fire), for thus As-Samiri proposed. 87 And he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot." 88 See they not, then, that it returneth no saying unto them and possesseth for them neither hurt nor use? 89
