These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 And a multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the later times (generations). 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
