The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night, when it envelops, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And who belieth the Good, 9 We will ease him toward difficulty. 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 None except the most wicked will enter it. 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
