The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 except those who are steadfast 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 and guard their private parts 29 Are free of blame, 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
