In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou enwrapped in thy robes, 1 Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little - 2 (Worship Him) for more or less than half of the night 3 Or increase thereto. And intone the Qur'an with measured intonations. 4 Verily We! anon We shall cast upon thee a weighty word. 5 Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words. 6 Indeed during the day you have a long schedule of occupations. 7 And remember thou the name of thy Lord, and devote thyself to Him with an exclusive devotion. 8 Lord of the east and the west! No God is there but He! Wherefore take Him for thy trustee. 9 Bear patiently with what they say and with a fine abandonment forsake them. 10 And leave Me Alone to deal with the beliers (those who deny My Verses, etc.), and those who are in possession of good things of life. And give them respite for a little while. 11 We have fetters (for them) and a blazing fire, 12 And food which choketh (the partaker), and a painful doom 13 On the Day when the earth with all its mountains quake and the mountains become heaps of shifting sand. 14 We have sent to you, (O men!) a messenger, to be a witness concerning you, even as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger; so We seized him with a heavy Punishment. 16 How then, if ye disbelieve, shall ye escape, on a Day which shall make children grey-headed? 17 The heaven will split asunder with its grief; the promise of Allah will surely occur. 18 Surely this is a Reminder; so let him who will take unto his Lord a way. 19
