Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 By the luminious Book. 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
